FAQ

Q: What do I do if it spills?

A: Immediately saturate the item with water, then try solvents. Make sure to spot test first. Another option would be to take the item to the dry cleaners after first saturating with water.

Q: Is there anything that removes Tear Mender™ once it is dry?

A: Some of our customers have told us that Detachol™ and Unisolv™ have been helpful to them. These are products that are used to remove bandage adhesive, and can usually be found at your local pharmacy.

Q: It bled through the fabric of the item I was trying to repair. What went wrong?

A: The first thing to consider is your method. How are you applying Tear Mender™? You should NEVER pour Tear Mender™ directly onto the fabric, as this will most likely cause it to bleed through. Instead, first pour a small amount onto a hard, finished surface (like a table or counter top) and then use your finger or a knife blade to apply a THIN coat of Tear Mender onto the item. Remember, when hemming with Tear Mender™, apply to the HEM SIDE ONLY. We always recommend spot testing first on a small, discreet area of the item to be repaired to ensure best results. Also, a little goes a long way, so be sure to use only what you need. Make sure to look over our "goof-proof" instructions (included with your purchase of Tear Mender™, and also on the "Directions" page of this web site). They are your best resource for successful Tear-Mending!

Q: I used Tear Mender™ on my son's/daughter's Scout Patches, and they didn't stick. What happened?

A: Tear Mender™ has saved a lot of moms a lot of time (and sore hands) when it comes to applying patches. However, if the patch you used has an iron-on backing, the backing must first be broken or cracked in order for Tear Mender™ to do its job. Just as it will not stick to your kitchen table or any other finished surface, Tear Mender™ will not bond to an intact iron-on backing. If the backing is cracked or broken, Tear Mender™ can bond to the fibers of the patch itself. Also, be sure to apply Tear Mender™ all the way to the edges of the patch to ensure that they will not curl up over time. Please note that you can still use the same patch as before, just prepare the backing as described above.

Q: How can I tell if Tear Mender™ will work on a certain fabric?

A: Always spot test in an inconspicuous place on the item to be repaired. Make sure to follow our instructions that pertain to the type of repair you mean to do.

Q: What won't Tear Mender™ work on?

A: Tear Mender™ will bond anything it can penetrate. However, it will not harm finished surfaces such as tabletops or the finished side of leather. Tear Mender™ works best on natural fibers and on many synthetic fabrics. The smooth nature of nylon fabric requires use of a "sandwich" method (a patch on the inside and outside of the repair area) as long as cosmetic appearance is NOT crucial. This method yields a visible yet functional repair that restores the item to full use.

Q: I used Tear Mender™, but it doesn't seem to be sticking. What's wrong?

A: Tear Mender™ is a natural compound. Although an uncommon occurrence, deep-freezing can alter Tear Mender's composition (causing it to separate into a kind of "curds-and-whey" appearance) and therefore can affect its performance. Much care is taken with the manufacturing, warehousing, and shipment of Tear Mender™ to ensure that deep-freezing does not occur. Has your bottle been left or stored in a place where freezing is possible? An easy at-home test is to rub a small amount between your fingers. If it DOES NOT rub off into little crumbs, your Tear Mender™ has most likely been frozen. If the test proves that freezing was not the problem, be sure that you are following the instructions included with your bottle to make sure you are applying Tear Mender™ correctly.

Q: How can you remove Tear Mender™ from dog's ears?

A: Many dog owners have told us that Detachol™ and Unisolv™ have been helpful to them. These are products that are used to remove bandage adhesive, and can usually be found at your local pharmacy. Detachol™ in particular has been widely used in the dog market for years.

Q: My Tear Mender™ won't pour out of the bottle. What's wrong?

A: First, remove the cap and check to see if there is a "plug" of dried Tear Mender™ at or near the opening of the bottle. If so, remove it and the remaining Tear Mender™ should pour out just fine. A useful tip is to store your bottle either upside down or on its side to prevent the plug from re-forming. Remember, all adhesives have a shelf life. Tear Mender™ has a shelf life of at least 2 years – plenty of time to get your mending done!
