In this article, we’ll show you how to repair outdoor and hiking gear with Tear Mender. With our easy-to-follow tips, you’ll be prepared for anything that comes your way when exploring nature. Let’s get started!

Steps to Repair Outdoor Gear

Whether you're out on a hike, on the beach or in the backyard, having the right tools and materials to take care of any repairs can make all the difference. That's why Tear Mender and Vinyl Mender are such popular and reliable products for outdoor enthusiasts.

Tear Mender is a fast-acting fabric adhesive that makes quick work of repairing rips, tears, and snags in backpacks, sleeping bags, clothing, and other outdoor gear made from fabric or porous materials. Tear Mender’s Fabric Adhesive can be used multiple ways -  read our Directions for Use.

Vinyl Mender is designed for tougher jobs—like patching, sealing seams and tears, filling pinholes and providing an abrasion-resistant shield on high-wear areas like boat decks or boots. Best of all, you don't need a special set of tools to use it—just your hands and a few minutes of time! With both these products in your repair kit, you can take care of most common issues out in the field.

Step 1: Prepare

To get started, clean off any dirt, dust, or debris from your gear that needs repairing then allow it to dry. Alcohol swabs are provided but you can use a mixture of Isopropyl alcohol and water [50/50] as the cleaning solution.

Step 2: Apply Tear Mender Vinyl Patch

Once you've done the prep work it's time to apply Tear Mender's Vinyl Mender! Cut the Clear Adhesive Patch to a size 1-inch larger than the damaged area in all four directions. Round the corners of the patch to reduce the possibility of peeling back. Rounded corner patches perform better than square corners.

Prepare the patch for application by peeling back a small portion of the liner. By peeling back approximately ½ inch of liner it allows the bonding of the Clear Adhesive Patch to start. At one end slowly remove more of the liner and simultaneously smooth the patch onto the repair, pressing firmly to push out any air bubbles.

Press down firmly on the entire patch and rub hard along all the edges of the Clear Adhesive Patch.

Step 3: Test Your Repair Job

Test out how well your repaired gear held up with a simple tug test of the fabric. If everything is still in place—you're good to go! And because Tear Mender is airtight, flexible and waterproof, you don't have to worry about those pesky repairs coming undone anytime soon.

Tear Menders provides an easy and convenient way to get your outdoor gear back in action at a fraction of the cost you might experience if you took it off-site (or if most tent manufacturers offered repair services). Plus, it only takes three minutes or less—it's like going to an emergency repair shop!
